King Kamehameha: A Legacy Renewed
The original statue of King Kamehameha, cast in Paris in the 1880ʻs and the first statue in the Islands, stands in rural North Kohala, the legendary birthplace of Kamehameha I. In 1996 conservator Glenn Wharton was sent by public arts administrators to assess the statueʻs condition. King Kamehameha: A Legacy Renewed is an account of his efforts to conserve the Kohala Kamehameha statue, but it is also the story of a journey to understand the statueʻs meaning for the residents of Kohala. This is a co-production of Kiʻi Productions and the Hawaiʻi Alliance for Arts Education in partnership with PBS Hawaiʻi. The program was produced in association with ITVS and Pacific Islanders in Communications, with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
