From the Possibility to the Certainty of a Supermassive Black Hole
1h 15m
Presented by W.M. Keck Observatory, Nobel Laureate and UCLA Physics and Astronomy Professor Andrea Ghez and the UCLA Galactic Center Group have gathered the best evidence to date for the existence of a supermassive black hole at the heart of our galaxy. Their research, which involved 20 years of high-resolution imaging at W. M. Keck Observatory, won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics. Recent observations reveal the environment surrounding the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole has surprising features, offering new insight into how black holes grow, how they impact the growth of their host galaxy, and how gravity works near these truly exotic objects.
